Through collaborative community partnerships and access to funding through the Extraordinary Learning Fund, students are provided with unique opportunities to apply their new skills and knowledge outside the classroom.
Centre of Rural Aging and Health (CORAH)
A partnership between NSCC, Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, and Department of Seniors and Long-term Care promotes healthy practices, relationships, eating and active living for adults aged 55+ in Middleton through NSCC’s Annapolis Valley Campus. This innovative program:
- Collaborates with campus staff and students to support seniors’ well-being with hands-on programming related to students’ learning outcomes
- Offers 14-19 weekly sessions and activities such as fitness programs, studio art sessions, and participant-centred presentations attended by 160-200 seniors weekly
- Is gaining interest from other municipalities across Nova Scotia
Reporting in Mi’kma’ki
NSCC Radio Television Journalism students participated in the four-week Reporting in Mi’kma’ki workshop, offered in partnership with University of Kings College, to learn responsible reporting for Indigenous stories. Throughout this workshop, students:
- Spent one week in Eskasoni Mi’kmaw Nation learning about cultural values, language and concepts
- Interviewed and learned from community members, Elders and residential school survivors
- Wrote an article titled “Kwe’ Eskasoni”, which won gold at the 2022 Canadian Online Publishing Awards
Wellness Champions
Students and Wellness Champions Bella K. and Carly M. promoted mental health and well-being at NSCC’s Cumberland and Burridge Campuses thanks to Rapid Response funding. The two hosted campus events on:
- Wellness and mental health
- Food insecurity
- Decompressing and stressbusting
- Sleep hygiene
- Body neutrality
- Practicing gratitude
- Time management
Horticulture Field Trip
Horticulture and Landscape Technology students visited the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, where they observed maintenance practices and methods, practiced plant identification and compared garden designs.
- 40 students attended
- Used Extraordinary Learning Funds for transportation to the gardens
- 100% of students said they’d visit again and found value in the trip
