“All the classroom theories that we have learned came to fruition in this one opportunity to practice interpreting and all that it encompasses.”

Keira H. American Sign Language and English Interpretation '25, Ivany Campus 2024 Student Learning Opportunity Participant

“When we are afforded an opportunity such as the Harbour Hopper trip, the students get a much more robust and accurate experience that more closely mirrors the day-to-day work of interpreters, which was our primary goal.”

Student learning opportunities

Donor funding to the Extraordinary Learning Fund supports unique learning opportunities outside of the classroom, providing students with the opportunity to apply their skills in the real world. These funds help students across the province through practical learning, including program-related field trips, conferences and access to expert guest speakers.

This year, second-year American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpretation Program (AEIP) students from Ivany Campus were given the meaningful opportunity to charter the Halifax Harbour Hopper to bring their classroom learning to a real-world setting. Thanks to the Extraordinary Learning Fund, the students were given a unique experience to interpret the presentation of the tour guide for first-year AEIP and ASL students while navigating the changing environments from land to sea around the City.
