“I will apply everything I’m learning at NSCC to future endeavors to help Membertou, my community, grow. It is my hope that I will inspire other Mi’kmaw people to continue their education to better themselves and their communities.”

Reaching new heights through education
After working as a crane operator for the past seven years on some of the biggest developments in Cape Breton, Tuma Stevens is re-investing in his future through an education at NSCC.
Tuma, a multi-award recipient, will graduate from NSCC’s Business Administration program in 2023. Scholarships and bursaries made it possible for Tuma to enrol in this program, where he is gaining the foundation needed to pursue future dreams of entrepreneurship and community leadership.
“Through the pandemic, the importance of having a solid education became clear to me. After being out of school for eight years and working for seven in a trade I love, it was a big leap of faith to enroll at NSCC, but I knew it was the right step to take to achieve my ultimate goals,” shares Tuma.
