What's next
Reflecting upon the past two years, it is evident that a culture of wellbeing is being embraced and nurtured by students and employees within our campuses across the province. Culture change is not easy, but it is possible with sustained effort that is collaborative, dignified, respectful and relational.
NSCC is a signatory on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) Accord and has identified these goals as a strategic priority of the College. In line with SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, the results from the 2021 path forward survey indicate that a fortified understanding is in fact building capacity and connection to championing wellness work. Considering the required flexibility in navigating through the past two years of uncertainty, this progress report demonstrates that our mental wellness strategy is in motion and on the ground.
The emphasis of campus-led health promotion initiatives synergizes our values with our vision and mission. Our current strategic plan outlines priority areas of impact – inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility and anti-racism (IDEA2) and evolving social fabric. These priority areas are intimately connected to wellbeing. Our mental wellness strategy will accelerate the strategic enablers of balance and quality of life by empowering us all, one learner at a time. Lifelong learning provides a shared blueprint for health and wellness for our people now. Looking forward, our culture of mental wellness will evolve in a safe, equitable and inclusive evolving social fabric and go hand-in-hand with holistic strategies that improve health and education.
Our 22-23 mental wellness strategy action plan is focused on supporting initiatives that have proven value as well as addressing gaps by trying and evaluating some new things.
- We are expanding our Inquiring Minds workshop for students.
- We are piloting a Student Wellness Champion program to promote campus mental health and wellbeing.
- We are refreshing existing tools and promoting new tools to build capacity among our employees to support student mental health.
