How NSCC connects talent and training to industry needs
NSCC’s Industry Partnerships team plays a vital role in turning big ideas into real impact by aligning the college’s strengths in training, applied research and innovation with the needs of Nova Scotia’s key sectors. From shipbuilding and clean tech to aerospace and defence, the team connects industry with the talent, facilities and expertise required to succeed, fueling economic growth and workforce development across the province.
A major focus this year has been marine trades, a high-demand field with strong momentum both provincially and nationally. In collaboration with Irving Shipbuilding, the team helped launch a new training initiative providing free tuition and full financial support for 80 students across 4 trades programs. Graduates who meet hiring criteria will be considered for employment, helping close the gap between training and workforce needs.
Additionally, the team designed, developed and piloted 8 new marine manufacturing courses tailored for students and early-career professionals. Over 100 participants enrolled in fall 2024, including second-year NSCC students and sector employees. This strong interest highlights the value of targeted, sector-specific training that keeps pace with evolving workforce demands.
Thanks to the Industry Partnerships team, NSCC also began upgrades to its welding and metal fabrication shops at Akerley Campus. With $3.2 million in funding secured and planning complete, new equipment, improved ventilation, upgraded mechanical systems and a dedicated grinding room will enhance safety and expand capacity for training future trades professionals.
“This is where training meets opportunity,” says Dwayne MacLeod, Manager of Industry Partnerships. “By working closely with employers, we ensure NSCC students are ready to step into high-impact careers and that industry has the talent needed to grow.”
The team also plays a key role in connecting NSCC to national priorities in aerospace and defence. As a military-connected college, NSCC collaborates with organizations supporting Regular Forces, Reserves and Veterans, and helps major contractors fulfill their Industrial and Technological Benefit (ITB) obligations. These partnerships ensure Nova Scotia remains competitive in Canada’s innovation economy.
“We are pleased to announce the Marine Trades Initiative. This program, created in partnership with NSCC, will create opportunities for more Canadians to build rewarding careers in the trades, while strengthening our world-class marine sector. Investing in skilled talent is essential to the long-term growth and viability of Canada’s marine industry.”
